Types of dates
There are a lot of types of dates fruit in Iran such as such as Mazafati (Kimia), Piarom (Medjool), Rabbie, Zahedi, Kabkab and Sayer.
Dates are available the whole year but as they are harvested during fall and early in winter, they are fresh in these seasons.
You can separate dates in some categories like soft, semisoft and dry.
Dry dates are naturally having little amount of water inside and hasn’t been dried by machines.
In the following lines we will show you different types of dates from Iran, with pictures and explanations.
- Mazafati dates (Kimia dates)
This date is growing in Bam city in Kerman province. This kind of date is considered the most delicious date fruit around the world. This kind has a soft texture and the fruit is dark purple or black.
- Piarom (Medjool)
Another kind of Iranian date that can be put in semisoft category is Piarom date, also called Medjool, which is cultivated in Hormozgam province. This kind of dates is totally organic and no amount of chemical is used in the growing time.
- Rabbie
This kind of date has a little hard texture. The fruit is semidry and the shape is long and black or dark brown color. Rabbie date is a crop of Sistan and Baluchistan province in Iran.
- Zahedi
Zahedi date has a crunchy fibrous flesh and is considered dried. This type of dates is called nobility. This date is also very popular in Iran but some of this kind is sliced and used for dates sugar products. Chinses dates or Jujube is really similar with this kind of date but they are not from same botanical family. The color of this kind is yellow.
- Kabkab
The kind is large and dark brown and comes from Dashtestan and Kazerun town. Kabkab dates is the most abundant date fruit in Iran and I can say where ever you can find this kind of date. Also Iranian people love this kind as it has a super sweet taste and dark color.
- Sayer
40% of Sayer produced date is exported outside of Iran. The color is yellow at the beginning but when ripen, the color changes to amber or reddish brown.
